JerseyWatch 2019

Another year, another batch of new NHL logos and jerseys. For all the latest reports on what’s coming in the 2019-20 season, look no further than JerseyWatch 2019!

Adidas Catalog

Icethetics got an exclusive first look at the 2019-20 Adidas catalog last December. This is a document distributed to retailers to help them plan what to stock for the coming year but is by no means set in stone. As usual, the catalog doesn’t show specific jersey designs, but rather blank jersey outlines marked “confidential.”

Much of what you find in the JerseyWatch is based on the contents of this catalog, but it’s always subject to change as teams make their final decisions. But it does tell us what teams to keep an eye out for!

New third jersey delayed?

Unknown The Adidas catalog listed the Senators among other teams getting new thirds in 2019-20. However, the team used their red NHL100 Classic jersey on Oct. 14, meaning whatever new sweater was in the pipeline appears to have been delayed or scrapped. This does track with the reported rebrand that is planned for the 2020-21 season. article

Rebrand planned for 2020

The Ottawa saga is long but I’ll sum up as best I can. First, Sens COO Nicolas Ruszkowski told TSN last September that the team is working on a “new permanent logo for the 2019-20 season.” Three months later, Sens CMO Aimee Deziel confirmed to Sens Callups podcast that a new logo is in the works but said the soonest they could launch is the 2020-21 season due to NHL requirements and Adidas manufacturing timelines. source

As an aside, this might seem trivial, but some have reported Deziel said the earliest season possible for the rebrand is 2021-22, but if you listen to the podcast, what she actually says at 13:25 is “the twenty twenty-one season,” which could be taken to mean 2021 or 20/21 (the way you might call this year the 19/20 season). It’s a bit confusing I know. However, she clears it up moments later when she says, “introduction is at least a season and a half away.” A season and a half from December 2018 would be the start of the 2020-21 season. But of course she says, “at the earliest,” which means the new logo could still come later than that in 2021 or beyond if they need extra time.

Survey may shed light on rebrand

In July 2018, an Ottawa radio personality tweeted a screenshot of some proposed Senators logos shown in a team survey. The Sens replied to that tweet, confirming the images were indeed part of their survey. source

When Deziel did her interview with Sens Callups, she actually provided some response data associated with that question about the logos. I don’t recall ever seeing this kind of transparency from a team! Anyway, it breaks down fan preference for each design. In essence, it says fans still largely prefer the current logo to any other but not by a large enough margin for the team to sit pat. source

New alternate arriving soon

Expected Three years since their rebrand, the Panthers will be adding a new third jersey. The most obvious choice may be a navy blue design with the modernized leaping cat front and center. However, the Panthers are removing that leaping cat logo from their helmets for 2019-20. Is that because they’re shifting away from that logo or making it exclusive to the third jersey?

Jersey Retirement The Panthers announced in August that they will retire Roberto Luongo’s No. 1 sweater on March 7, 2020. It’ll be the first player number retired in franchise history. However, the Panthers have previously retired numbers in honor of team executives. In 2010, No. 93 was retired for Bill Torrey and in 2018, No. 37 was raised to the rafters for Wayne Huizenga.

Third jersey possible?

Possible The Red Wings have never had a regular third jersey so seeing one listed in the catalog was a big deal. But this is a team with high jersey standards and I've heard they weren't in love with the prototype they've been working on. I'd say it's 50/50 at this point as to whether they move forward for 2019-20. That said, they've definitely had some outdoor jerseys worthing taking a second look at.

Franchise established Dec. 4, 2018

It’s finally happening! Seattle’s newly awarded NHL franchise will not begin play until the 2021-22 season, but they will make waves with a name announcement planned for fall 2019. No word yet on whether we should also expect a logo, but since Icethetics is Seattle-based, I can promise you plenty of coverage!

The names getting the most buzz among fans as of June are Sockeyes (believed to be a favorite within the organization) as well as Kraken and Totems. I'm still partial to Breakers, myself.

Fan portal and team website launched

On May 9, the organization launched a website for fans that includes information about the future team as well as a new script wordmark. There was a poll asking visitors about their preferences for the club’s branding. Results were released aafter a couple of weeks, showing 65% of fans want the new brand to include green. Meanwhile, 31% were in favor of team being named for a mythical creature. source

On June 5, the team's official website transitioned to the NHL.com domain. The new site features a color palette of a salmon red and seafoam green. website

In a tweet the following day, the team seemed to dismiss the idea that these will be the official colors. source
