Adidas Catalog

Icethetics got an exclusive first look at the 2019-20 Adidas catalog last December. This is a document distributed to retailers to help them plan what to stock for the coming year but is by no means set in stone. As usual, the catalog doesn’t show specific jersey designs, but rather blank jersey outlines marked “confidential.”

Much of what you find in the JerseyWatch is based on the contents of this catalog, but it’s always subject to change as teams make their final decisions. But it does tell us what teams to keep an eye on!

New third jersey slated; orange likely

Heritage Classic in Saskatchewan

Expected Calgary will face Winnipeg at Mosaic Stadium in Regina, Sask. on Oct. 26. Teams generally wear throwbacks for this event. A white one is in the works.

Time is right for 40th anniversary

Possible The Flames celebrated 30 years in Calgary during 2009-10, so the 40th is a fair bet for 2019-20. (The franchise relocated from Atlanta in 1980.) It doesn’t mean much other than possibly some shoulder patches. They’re already wearing their original jersey as a third.

Collars getting an update

Expected The biggest surprise of the catalog was seeing new home and road jerseys listed for Chicago. But don't worry, the Blackhawks aren't doing anything crazy. They're just updating the awful collar design. A leaked image from an online shop corroborates this. It's not perfect, but it's a big improvement.

Speculation It's too early to know what kind of retro sweater the Stars have in mind, but if I were to guess, I see it going one of two ways. Either the Stars dig into their own relatively brief history for something from the Mike Modano era, or they go back to the dawn of Texas hockey. source

Third jersey possible?

Possible The Red Wings have never had a regular third jersey so seeing one listed in the catalog was a big deal. But this is a team with high jersey standards and I've heard they weren't in love with the prototype they've been working on. I'd say it's 50/50 at this point as to whether they move forward for 2019-20. That said, they've definitely had some outdoor jerseys worthing taking a second look at.

Expected The Oilers are in line for a new third jersey in 2019-20. In April, an Icethetics source reported secondhand that the team will not return to the retro blue sweater as many suspected. Instead, I’m told the new design could be navy blue and orange without any white! It may also have elements inspired by the Team North America jersey from the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

New third jersey might be delayed

Possible The Adidas catalog had the Wild down for a new third jersey, but a recent report from Michael Russo at The Athletic suggests it may not be happening. Russo says the team had been looking at a new design but apparently TV testing did not go well. So it may be off the table for 2019-20. source

Possible Russo added that the Wild are vying to host the Winter Classic in 2020-21 and, if they get it, a new third jersey would have to wait until at least 2021-22. New third jersey in the pipeline

Expected Because the Adidas catalog lists the Senators with other teams getting new thirds in 2019-20, I don’t think we’ll see the red NHL100 Classic jersey again. It’s more likely they get something new.

Rebrand planned for 2020

The Ottawa saga is long but I’ll sum up as best I can. First, Sens COO Nicolas Ruszkowski told TSN last September that the team is working on a “new permanent logo for the 2019-20 season.” Three months later, Sens CMO Aimee Deziel confirmed to Sens Callups podcast that a new logo is in the works but said the soonest they could launch is the 2020-21 season due to NHL requirements and Adidas manufacturing timelines. source

As an aside, this might seem trivial, but some have reported Deziel said the earliest season possible for the rebrand is 2021-22, but if you listen to the podcast, what she actually says at 13:25 is “the twenty twenty-one season,” which could be taken to mean 2021 or 20/21 (the way you might call this year the 19/20 season). It’s a bit confusing I know. However, she clears it up moments later when she says, “introduction is at least a season and a half away.” A season and a half from December 2018 would be the start of the 2020-21 season. But of course she says, “at the earliest,” which means the new logo could still come later than that in 2021 or beyond if they need extra time.

Survey may shed light on rebrand

In July 2018, an Ottawa radio personality tweeted a screenshot of some proposed Senators logos shown in a team survey. The Sens replied to that tweet, confirming the images were indeed part of their survey. source

When Deziel did her interview with Sens Callups, she actually provided some response data associated with that question about the logos. I don’t recall ever seeing this kind of transparency from a team! Anyway, it breaks down fan preference for each design. In essence, it says fans still largely prefer the current logo to any other but not by a large enough margin for the team to sit pat. source

Franchise established Dec. 4, 2018

It’s finally happening! Seattle’s newly awarded NHL franchise will not begin play until the 2021-22 season, but they will make waves with a name announcement planned for fall 2019. No word yet on whether we should also expect a logo, but since Icethetics is Seattle-based, I can promise you plenty of coverage!

The names getting the most buzz among fans as of June are Sockeyes (believed to be a favorite within the organization) as well as Kraken and Totems. I'm still partial to Breakers, myself.

Fan portal and team website launched

On May 9, the organization launched a website for fans that includes information about the future team as well as a new script wordmark. There was a poll asking visitors about their preferences for the club’s branding. Results were released aafter a couple of weeks, showing 65% of fans want the new brand to include green. Meanwhile, 31% were in favor of team being named for a mythical creature. source

On June 5, the team's official website transitioned to the NHL.com domain. The new site features a color palette of a salmon red and seafoam green. website

Gold third jersey headed to Vegas?

Confirmed The Golden Knights are not the kind of team to waste time. They went to the Stanley Cup Final in their first season and, in their third, they’ll add a third jersey!
