After a hiatus in 2022, the written edition of NHL JerseyWatch returns to cover all the confirmed, rumored, and speculated updates to teams’ logos and jerseys in the 2023-24 season.
This summer, Dylan Tusinski joins Icethetics as our official intern and has compiled and written this JerseyWatch report with guidance from Chris. This page will be updated periodically as we receive new information.

Confirmed While details remain scarce around what Calgary will be wearing at the 2023 Heritage Classic, the club’s director of marketing, Ryan Popowich, confirmed via Twitter that Calgary will wear a “road white” design which was finalized in late 2022.
Reported An Icethetics source confirms the Carolina Hurricanes will be the latest team to join the retro jersey trend. The Canes are reportedly promoting their well-received 25th anniversary jersey to a full-time alternate after wearing them at home during their 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs run.
Reported Speculation around Edmonton’s jersey for the 2023 Heritage Classic has revolved around a 1950s-era team called the Edmonton Mercurys. Oilers Nation podcaster Tyler Yaremchuk fueled speculation by tweeting that the team will base their look off that club, which represented Canada at the 1950 Ice Hockey World Championships and 1952 Winter Olympics, winning gold on both occasions.
Expected Get ready for more green and gold. An Icethetics source reports the Minnesota Wild will continue their recent tributes to the North Stars as they adopt their popular Reverse Retro design from 2022-23 as a new third jersey.
This change comes after a pair of prototypes of unused Wild alternate jerseys leaked last March, showing that the team was considering using black as a base color. Michael Russo of The Athletic reported that the team scrapped those designs after they failed TV camera tests.
Confirmed The NHL announced Toronto will host the 2024 All-Star weekend, February 2-3. It will be the city’s ninth time hosting and first since 2000. The event logo is usually released in late summer before the start of the regular season. Jerseys typically arrive much later, often only weeks before the All-Star game itself.
Confirmed The Battle of Alberta will be taken outside on October 29 as the Oilers face off against the Flames at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium. It’s the first time the Heritage Classic has been held in consecutive calendar years, and will be each team’s third outdoor appearance. This game will mark the 20th anniversary of the event, which debuted at the same stadium in 2003.
Reported As the NHL Stadium Series returns for its 10th anniversary, the league is reportedly planning to host multiple games for the first time since 2016. MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey would play host to a set of back-to-back games next February, according to a report from NHL Network host and analyst David Pagnotta. He claimed the Devils and Flyers would play in one game, with the Islanders and Rangers facing off in the other.
Rumored Despite the report, the NHL still has yet to officially announce a Stadium Series game for the 2023-24 season. It’s been heavily rumored that the Tampa Bay Lightning are actively pushing to host the annual outdoor game. Florida’s humid weather poses some logistical challenges, but it’s worth noting the team’s early home was the building now known as Tropicana Field—prior to the arrival of the MLB’s Tampa Bay Rays. Could we see them return for one night?
Confirmed The Seattle Kraken will host the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2024 NHL Winter Classic at T-Mobile Park on New Year’s Day. Being recent expansion franchises, neither club will have direct throwback jerseys, which are common for this event. Instead, we’re likely to see fauxbacks—or new designs with a retro feel.
The Winter Classic event logo is typically released in mid to late summer.
Reported We’re starting to sound like a broken record, but once again an Icethetics source reports that the New York Rangers should be getting a new third jersey next year. Details are scant, but after seeing teams around the league adopting Reverse Retro uniforms as alternates, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Lady Liberty return to the ice once again next year, reprising her original role on an alternate jersey.
Reported An Icethetics source has confirmed the Flyers are updating their identity with a tweaked color scheme and updated home and road uniforms. The team is reverting to a previous darker shade of orange. It’s been reported that the Flyers’ new uniforms will be retro-inspired updates of their current jerseys, with wider sleeve yokes and minimal waist striping.
The Flyers have already hinted towards the change, updating their social media branding with the darker orange. For the color-inclined, the switch is from Pantone 172 to 173.
Confirmed The Seattle Kraken will host the 2024 NHL Winter Classic, but not much is known yet about what the team will wear for the marquee outdoor game. The Kraken could use the opportunity to reprise the iconic barber-pole jerseys of the Seattle Metropolitans, who were the first American team to win the Stanley Cup in 1917.
Reported The Tampa Bay Lightning may be the latest team to join the ’90s throwback craze, with an Icethetics source indicating the team’s next alternate jersey could be inspired by their early ‘90s black uniforms.
Confirmed The Vegas Golden Knights will head to Seattle for the 2024 NHL Winter Classic, but their jerseys are still subject of speculation. The six-year-old expansion team doesn’t have much history on which to draw throwback jersey inspiration.
Noteworthy After using the ’90s-era Las Vegas Thunder of the IHL as the basis for their first Reverse Retro, the Golden Knights chose to come up with something entirely original for the program’s second round in 2022. The team could borrow from some of Las Vegas’ other historical hockey teams—such as the ECHL’s Las Vegas Wranglers of the early 2000s or the South West Hockey League’s Las Vegas Gamblers of the 1960s—or they could come up with another completely new design.
